Currently in theaters is John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, the third installment of the John Wick franchise, written by Derek Kolstad, directed by Chad Stahelski, and (of course) starring Keanu Reeves. Nerd Nation Magazine was in attendance for the early press screening courtesy of Lionsgate, Allied Marketing, and Regal Cinemas.
Keanu Reeves, the “Hollywood Vampire” as he’s jokingly known to some, is back for the third installment of the John Wick franchise. Sadly, I missed the press screener personally due to an unfortunate illness, and believe me, no one was dragging me out of my coffin that night. However, I knew I needed to see this one, despite not making it out there with my Nerd Nation cohorts, which is why I forked over the capital to see it.
That’s right, I spent actual money to see it and I was not disappointed. This movie delivered exactly the ass kicking I needed after a long week. There are guns-a-plenty, serious fight scenes (forget about the bathroom, there’s not enough down time), Halle Berry shows up to lay down some serious ass kicking, and Laurence Fishburne is back to remind people who is king.
If you haven’t seen the other two, I highly suggest you do so, especially as there’s a comic book coming out of it and a possible TV spinoff for the Continental Hotel which is featured in all three movies. If I’ve read it correctly, the comic is due out in September. Also, if you haven’t seen the other two, you will be a bit lost watching this one.
But I digress, back to the review.
Wick is still kicking ass and not bothering with names. This time around, though, he gets some help from new sources while some of his other associates, those who helped him in the last movie, get offered seven days to step down from their leadership positions.
Meanwhile, Wick goes from New York, where he was at the end of John Wick 2, to Casablanca in search of someone. I’m not going to say who or why, but I will tell you that he must continue his path of devastation as he goes.
Like I said, this movie delivers. The action is almost non-stop, the stunts are epic, and well-choreographed. Let’s face it, you’re really going to see this because Keanu Reeves is in it kicking ass, getting his ass kicked, yet still managing to drag his broken body back up to kick some more ass before hobbling away to kick some more ass. Then again, isn’t that what action movies are for!?!
Or, maybe that’s why I went to see it, but I’ve watched almost all the Sharknado movies so I might be a tad bit off. Either way, if you like big action flicks, and this girl absolutely does, this is exactly the movie for you!
The Bottom Line:
Overall, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is everything you want out of a big budget action movie, if that’s all you’re going for. If it were just for the stunts alone, I’d give the Hollywood Vampire 10 out of 10, but it’s not. No, honestly, this one is better than the last one, but definitely not better than the first. It most definitely needs to be seen in theaters at least once, maybe twice. Just remember to pee before the movie starts. You won’t have time after. It’s pure adrenaline, action-movie, summer blockbuster fare, and if you’re into that, this is definitely for you. – 8.0/10
