The idea of adapting a hit movie into a television series can be 50/50 at best. About half the time, sometimes more, the show ends up falling on its face because too many facets of what made the movie great just simply do not show up on the small screen.

As one would imagine, I went into watching Snatch: The Series with this ever-present mindset; expecting a pile of cinematic garbage but hoping for something surprising. In this instance, I turned out to be very pleasantly surprised!
Snatch as we all know is that great misanthropic British crime/comedy from 2000 written and directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Jason Statham, Benicio del Toro, and Brad Pitt about a boxing promoter, a band of gypsies, and a really big diamond that are all interconnected in their own wacky way. Fast-forward some 17 years later and the TV series has done a great justice in sticking to this theme with multiple groups all going after a big stack of gold.

Starring Rupert Grint (better known as Ron Weasley from the Harry Potter movie empire) who also serves as the show’s executive producer, Snatch: The Series centers around Albert Hill (Luke Pasqualino of The Musketeers and Skins), the son of a famous bank robber, Vic Hill, battling the influence of his father from behind bars and trying to keep his own life above water while trying to promote his childhood friend Billy (Lucien Laviscount of Scream Queens and The Bye Bye Man) with his burgeoning boxing career along with his bohemian rich friend, Charlie (Grint).

The trio find themselves in debt to several members of the organized crime world and decide to heist one of the crime leaders’ money trucks in order to get a leg up both financially and to save face with Albert’s father Vic’s reputation as a master thief. The friends unwittingly rob the wrong truck and end up with a giant stack of gold that everyone in England is after, and has put a target on the boys’ backs. What follows through the 10-episode season is a rollercoaster of misadventure, plot twists, and mayhem that does the original film a great credit; and if you pay attention to the dialogue, they toss in a lot of one-liners paying homage as well.

Snatch: The Series is a Crackle Original Series and its first season is currently available in its entirety for free streaming on the Crackle TV app.

The Bottom Line:
Overall, Snatch: The Series is hands-down one of the best new shows to come out in the past few years, and one everyone should give a watch, especially if you are a fan of the original movie. While Crackle isn’t nearly as well-known as other streaming services like Netflix or Hulu for its original programming, this is definitely an excellent series and one that could absolutely put them into a new proverbial weight class. – 8.0/10
