Iconic television and film actor Ron Glass, best known for his performances as NYPD Detective Ron Harris in ‘Barney Miller’ and Shepherd Derrial Book in ‘Firefly’ and ‘Serenity’ has died at the age of 71.

A veteran actor, Glass landed his breakout role on ‘Barney Miller’ in 1975, for which he received an Emmy nomination, and went on to appeal in several TV shows, including ‘The New Odd Couple’, ‘The Twilight Zone’, ‘Family Matters’ and ‘Murder She Wrote’ before landing his iconic fan-favorite role as the mysterious Shepherd Book in ‘Firefly’ in 2002, followed by a reprised role in 2005’s ‘Serenity’. His last notable appearance came on Marvel’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘ as Dr. Streiten. According to various reports, stemming rom a statement from his agent, Jeffrey Leavitt, Glass died Saturday, November 26 from respiratory failure.
“Ron was a private, gentle and caring man,” said Jeffrey Leavitt. “He was an absolute delight to watch on screen. Words cannot adequately express my sorrow.”
