FORT MYERS, FL: One person is dead, with five others wounded after a shooting occurred Saturday night at Florida’s ZombiCon event. The horror-themed convention, located in Fort Myers, Florida reportedly drew over 10,000 attendees, before an unidentified suspect, allegedly began shooting out front of the convention on First Street in downtown.
Victor Medico, a spokesperson from the Fort Myers Police Department, issued an official statement, wherein he identified the deceased victim as Expavious Tyrell Taylor of Okeechobee, Florida, and stated that four other unidentified victims were taken to Lee Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, with the fifth victim refusing medical treatment at the scene. Taylor was reported dead on the scene after it was established that the shooting took place around 11:30pm Saturday. After the shooting and subsequent 911 call, it was also reported that thousands were seen fleeing from the zombie/horror convention in a mass panic.
As of time of this report, a suspect has yet to be identified or apprehended, although according to police, a manhunt is currently underway.
Pushing DaiZies, Inc., organizers of the ZombiCon event shared a statement following the shooting. “We take the safety of our patrons very seriously and take precautions in hiring security and police officers for our annual event” said Rachel Telfor, security coordinator of the event. “Our prayers go out to the family members and individuals involved in the incident” said Janet DeMarco, convention founder.
Amid numerous tragic shootings receiving a vast amount of media coverage this year, to say nothing of others that did not receive such coverage, to the best of our knowledge here at Nerd Nation, this is the first such incident to ever occur at a convention or fandom event.
